Pony Club event thrives at Bredbo
Over the weekend Bredbo saw 130 pony clubbers attend the Michelago Pony Club (MPC) two-day sporting gymkhana. Sporting events comprise fast timed events involving the manoeuvring of horses over and around obstacles.
The gymkhana attracted many riders from various parts of NSW and the ACT. The heavy Friday rain did not dampen enthusiasm and the regular bogging of cars and trucks proved a Friday afternoon spectacle. Despite the rain the Bredbo recreation ground held up brilliantly.
Forest Hills dominated proceedings winning the Clear Range Sporting Trophy that is awarded to the most successful club. The cup was presented by local council members Jenny Lawless and Martin Hughes, each of whom has been supportive of this event for several years.
The riders in the Forest Hills team were Riley and Steph McKillop, Rachel Temm, Sarah Beale and Kristie Nixon. The first four riders in the team also won their respective age groups. Other age group winners were Macey Rean of Arcadia, Rhys Smith of Sutton, Chay Wallace of Vines, Lauren Slater of Wamboin and Mikala Sherlock of Oberon.
Special awards were made by local barrel racing identity Michelle O’Neill and sponsor Max McMahon to the fastest barrel racer and fastest bondfield bounce racer of the weekend. They were Caroline Day of Forest Hills and Steph Mc Killop of Forest Hills.
The highlight of the gymkhana was the Saturday afternoon flag spectacular. The 25 fastest riders from the morning's flag event ran off in five heats to determine five finalists. The five finalists competed for the Man from Snowy River Medallion. The cream rose to the top with the final comprising 5 of the 6 fastest flag riders of the day, namely Rhys and Gareth Farmer of Muswellbrook, Emma Whalan of Oberon and past winners Katie Slater of Wamboin and Zac Hope of Canberra Riding Club. At the last flag only a couple of metres separated the field and the first to cross the line was Gareth Farmer who had worked hard to real in early pace-setter Rhys Farmer. Seasoned spectators said it was the best flag race ever witnessed.
Once again the event was well supported by local Bredbo businesses, the Bredbo Progress Association and the Cooma-Monaro Shire Council. MPC is very thankful for their support.
